By Francis Sadhere, Warri
The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and transfer of a police officer involved in the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.
In a press release issued on April 28, 2026, the Command condemned the incident, describing it as an extra-judicial killing that violated established rules and procedures of the Nigeria Police Force.
According to the statement, operatives attached to the Area Command in Effurun had acted on intelligence from members of the public about the suspect, who was allegedly caught attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition. Officers were deployed to take him into custody, but during the operation, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, discharged his firearm, resulting in the suspect’s death.
The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the officer’s actions, noting that they contravened Force Order 237 and the Force’s Standard Operating Procedures.
He directed the immediate arrest of the officer, who was subsequently moved to the State Headquarters in Asaba before being transferred to Abuja. The officer is expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for sanction and possible prosecution.
The Command reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law, respect for human rights, and accountability, stressing that it has zero tolerance for extra-judicial conduct.
While extending condolences to the family of the deceased, the Commissioner assured that justice would be served. He also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as investigations and disciplinary processes continue.
