By Our Correspondent , Warri
The family of Mr. Godwin Ajanemiwa is calling for a thorough investigation into what they describe as his unlawful killing by security personnel at Nigitrade Company Yard in Warri, Delta State, on December 12, 2024.
According to a statement from the family’s legal team, the tragic incident unfolded when Ajanemiwa was allegedly attacked by security guards under the suspicion of attempting to steal.
Mr. Shedrach Edede, Ajanemiwa’s elder brother, told his lawyers that he was contacted by a man named Olaye Izuagie around 9:00 p.m. on the day of the incident. Izuagie, later informed him that his brother had been badly injured by the security guards at the yard and needed immediate medical attention. Upon arriving at the scene, Edede was told that his brother had been attacked with a machete, sustaining severe injuries, including cuts to his wrist and other parts of his body.
Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital by a Good Samaritan, Ajanemiwa succumbed to his injuries and died shortly after arriving.
His family believes the actions of the security personnel were not only excessive but deliberate, raising serious concerns about the legality of the guards’ actions.
The legal team representing the family has formally requested that the Area Commander of Delta South initiate a full and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ajanemiwa’s death. They argue that even if the allegations of theft were true, the security personnel had no right to administer such lethal force.
The family’s legal representatives, Magnus Egin Atie & Co., have emphasized the need for swift action and accountability in a case they describe as an extrajudicial killing.
The call for justice has revibrated throughout the community, as many demand that those responsible for the incident be held accountable.
