Warri Rep, Thomas Ereyitomi, Defects to APC as Delta PDP Structures Collapse

By Francis Sadhere, Warri

The Member representing Warri Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Thomas Ereyitomi, has officially defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), marking a significant political realignment in Delta State.

Ereyitomi picked up his APC membership card on Tuesday at his Ogidigben Ward 10 in Warri South West Local Government Area.

He was formally registered into the party with membership number 35701, in a well-attended ceremony that included supporters and constituents.

The two-term federal lawmaker was elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but announced his decision to join the APC following Monday’s mass defection of PDP leaders and members in Delta State.

The defection ceremony, held in Asaba and led by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, included notable figures such as his predecessor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, elected officials, and appointed PDP members.

Speaking during the ceremony, Ereyitomi, who holds a traditional title in the Warri Kingdom, said his decision to join the APC was aligned with the collective resolution of PDP stakeholders in the state, reached during a recent interactive session.

The session concluded with a consensus to abandon the PDP due to its persistent internal crises and leadership vacuum since the 2023 general elections.

Governor Oborevwori, while addressing the crowd in Asaba on Monday, attributed the defection to the unresolved conflicts within the PDP and the need to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s policies.

The grand reception at the Cenotaph in Asaba was attended by top APC dignitaries, including Vice President Kassim Shettima, APC National Chairman Dr. Abdulahi Ganduje, 16 APC governors, ministers, and National Assembly members.

Ereyitomi assured his supporters that he would officially notify the National Assembly of his new political alignment and formally join the APC caucus in the House of Representatives when plenary resumes in May.

This wave of defections signifies a major political shift in Delta State, effectively dismantling the PDP’s long-standing structures and strengthening APC’s influence in the region.
