By Francis Sadhere
Worried by the present economic crunch in the country, the Udefi Obaloye of Warri Kingdom, Chief Clement Maleghemi, has called for the re-structuring of the country for the effective management of its resources.
Chief Maleghemi made the call while speaking with Journalists at his residence in Warri, when some prominent citizens of the state visited him to felicitate with him on his conferment as the Udefi Obaloye of Warri by the Olu of Warri, His Royal Majesty Ogiame Ikenwoli.
He said that the Presidential system of government which Nigeria currently practice is bogus, expensive and wasteful, therefore Nigeria should be restructured into zones for effective coordination and good governance.
“I am in support of restructuring. Nigeria needs to be restructured. The Presidential system of government is so expensive. It should be restructured into six regions to save wastages of resources and encourage development of the regions.”
The business mogul who believes in the unity of Nigeria and peaceful co-existence among all the ethnic and religious groups, said that diversification of the economy remain the only solution out of the present economic challenge.
He therefore appealed to Niger Delta Militants to embrace peace and stop further destruction of oil facilities as the polution occasioned by such act may hinder diversification of our environment.
“This is the very reason why we must discourage militancy and its attendant negative vices. The destruction of pipeline is polluting our environment. It should be discourage and let us embrace a more civilized approach to issues like the underdevelopment of the region as we are the ones that will at the end of the day.”
Chief Maleghemi threw his weight behind the fight against corruption in every facet of our society, called on the Nigeria Judicial Commission to investigate allegations against some judges in the country. He said the judiciary should be seen as the last hope for the common.
He advicated for the inclusion of the role of traditional rulers in the Nigerian Constitution to enable the traditional institutie to play her statutory role in society. “The traditional institution has not been given constitutional role. We need it to be included in the constitution. With the present situation in the country, recession, militancy and other challenges, they need to bring them in to help government project the policies and programmes.”
He admonished the youths to engage in meaningful ventures so as to contribute their quota in the affairs of governance, noting that present day youths are wasted generations for they lack focus and determination.”
