Sen. Joel-Onowakpo Expresses Appreciation to Nigerian Army as Ewu Monarch Regains Freedom
By Francis Sadhere, Warri
In a significant development for the Ewu Kingdom in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, His Royal Majesty King Clement Ikolo has regained his freedom after a period of detainment.
The release of the monarch has been met with appreciation from the Vice Chairman Senate Committee on Defence, Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, who commended the Nigerian Army for showing understanding in the matter.
Senator Joel-Onowakpo expressed his gratitude to the military for their cooperation, highlighting the importance of the monarch’s release in the ongoing efforts to restore peace in the area.
He emphasized the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including himself, Senator Ede Dafinone representing Delta Central Senatorial District, and Senator Ned Nwoko representing Delta North, in securing the monarch’s freedom.
The release of the monarch comes in the wake of the tragic killing of 17 officers and soldiers in the Okuama Community, prompting a need for amicable resolution of the underlying issues.
Senator Joel-Onowakpo voiced his confidence in the military hierarchy’s commitment to addressing the root causes of the violence and working towards lasting peace in the region.
The monarch was released to Senator Ede Dafinone by the military authorities earlier today, with an understanding that he would be made available if required.
Reports indicate that King Clement Ikolo is in good spirits, surrounded by his wife and other family members, following his return to freedom.
It would be recalled that three Delta senators on Tuesday, had met with the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Christopher Musa, seeking the release of the monarch, whom they believe may not be connected to the crisis that claimed the lives of the soldiers and some civilians.
The King was one of those declared wanted by the Nigerian Army on March 14th 2024 in the aftermath of the Okuama crisis leading to the death of soldiers and civilians including women and children and he submitted himself to the police to assist in the investigation.
The collaborative efforts of stakeholders, the understanding shown by the Nigerian Army, and the release of the monarch mark a positive step towards reconciliation and peace in the Ewu Kingdom. The community now looks towards a future of healing and stability as they work together to address the challenges they face.
