Relative Peace Restored in Ughelli as Business Activities Resume Amid Ongoing Protest

By Our Reporter, Warri

Relative peace has descended upon Ughelli, the administrative headquarters of Ughelli North local government area in Delta State, as business and commercial activities have partially resumed on the third day of the nationwide protest.

Following a stern warning issued by the council boss, Hon. Jaro Egbo, and the Nigerian police, protesters have retreated, leading to a calming atmosphere in the council area.

The initial apprehension of violent disruptions and reprisals from aggrieved protesters has subsided, allowing markets, shops, and businesses to reopen, with traders and customers engaging in their daily activities.

Transportation services have also seen a partial resumption, particularly at the state’s transport line Delta Line at Otovwodo Ughelli, where vehicles are once again plying the roads and commuters are able to undertake their daily journeys.

The protesters, who are advocating for good governance, economic development, and an end to corruption, have been staging marches through the major streets of Delta State, voicing their demands through slogans and placards.

The relative peace and the resumption of business activities in Ughelli North council, the epicenter of the protest in Delta State, have been attributed to the heavy presence of police and other security agencies in the vicinity of Otovwodo junction.

These security forces are ensuring the safety of protesters and bystanders alike, while also maintaining the peaceful nature of the demonstrations.

Residents who had previously remained indoors out of fear have now begun venturing outside, resuming their daily routines with a sense of relief as the situation stabilizes.

Furthermore, anonymous protesters have accused the Ughelli North Council chairman, Hon. Jaro Egbo, of inciting local youths against the protesters, leading to a clash between the police and peaceful demonstrators.

This development has added a layer of complexity to the ongoing protest dynamics in the region.
