One dead as army foil jail break in Warri Correctional Service
By Francis Sadhere, Warri
One prison warden is confirmed dead as inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Warri, on Thursday set the administrative office of the correctional center on fire in an attempt to break jail.
But for the efforts of the men of the Nigerian Army who swiftly responded to the distress call after the warders were overpowered by the inmates,107 inmates of the correctional centre would have escaped.
According to sources, trouble started when some hoodlums made their way to the Correctional facility in an attempt to free the inmates.
It was gathered that the inmates who seem to have been contacting the outside world in an effort to escape, snatched a rifle from one of the wardens and allegedly shot him dead and set the administrative building on fire.
But unfortunately for the Inmates, officers from the Nigerian Army sector one command led by Col. S. Ahmed, arrived on time and repelled the attack and the 107 inmates were safely contained.
When our correspondent got to the scene of the incident, the army were seen patrolling the facility while all the inmates have been safely contained.
Some youths who spoke to our correspondent commended the efforts of the Nigerian army saying that all the prisoners would have escaped if not for the army.
