TRADITIONAL INSTITUTION KEY TO FIGHTING CRIME

The traditional institution has been identified as a veritable
institution in the fight against crime and criminality in the state.

This was disclosed by Hon. David Tonwe, Director-General, Security
Matters, Delta State when he paid a courtesy call on HRM Abe 1(JP)
OON,  Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom in his Palace in Effurun, he noted that
value system have been eroded adding that to revive it, royal fathers who are the custodian of the people’s culture and values have major roles to play.

He said that he believes in the bottom to top approach in handling
security issues adding that traditional rulers are in the best
position to assist government drive the message to the people. He
observed that crime index of the state is very high and all hands must be on deck to check and to reduce it.

Hon. Tonwe who told the Uvwie monarch that he was in the palace with his team to inform him of their present position and role in the State informed the Ovie that the issue of cultism has eaten deep into the primary school system in the state and that there is the urgent need for all hands to be on deck to root it out before it destroys the
future of the state and the children.

The D.G observed that the fight will have to start from the home, he
called for the revival and re-invigoration of the Parents Teachers
Association (P.T.A), he suggested that mass enlightenment and
sensitization will have to be carried out, adding, “we have to talk to
ourselves, our brothers, sisters and our children. I am therefore
soliciting the help of the Royal father to speak to the people on the
threat security is posing to our society.”

Responding HRM Abe 1, Ovie of Uvwie Kingdom commended the
Director-General and his encourage for the visit, he frowned at the
growing incidence of cultism even among Primary school in the state
just as he promised that his doors are opened for any collaboration
between the D.G and the Palace in fighting the menace.

The Ovie disclosed that he places high premium on education adding
that he has various educational schemes and scholarship for indigenes and non-indigenes of Uvwie Kingdom. He further disclosed that he is ready to train any Uvwie child who is ready to be educated to any level of education.

The traditional ruler called for the provision of conducive
environment that would enhance teaching and learning in schools but lamented the lack of discipline and respect in today’s society, saying this is not the Uvwie they grew up in.
