Oborevwori, Diri, Others Honoured with Doctorate Degrees at Nigerian Maritime University Convocation

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, and Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, were on Saturday conferred with honorary Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) degrees in Social and Economic Development by the Nigerian Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, during the institution’s 2nd Combined Convocation Ceremony.
The event, which also marked NMU’s 10th anniversary, saw the conferment of similar honors on Senator James Manager, who received a Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) in National Development, and Engr. Ebipador Ogionwo, who was awarded a Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) in Industrial Development.
Governor Oborevwori, represented by the State Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Nyerowho Tonukari, expressed deep gratitude to the university for the recognition, which he described as a testament to the resilient spirit of Deltans and his administration’s dedication to inclusive development.
“I receive this recognition not merely as a personal honour but as a tribute to the resilient spirit of our people, the tireless efforts of our administration, and the shared vision we hold for a more inclusive Delta State and a prosperous Nigeria,” the governor said in his acceptance remarks.
He commended the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and university leadership for their commitment to recognizing public service and leadership, noting that the award reflects NMU’s focus on societal development through education.
Oborevwori reaffirmed his government’s belief in education as a critical investment for the future and praised the university’s role as a catalyst for growth in riverine and underserved communities.
“Since its establishment, the Nigerian Maritime University has provided world-class education in maritime studies and fostered human capital development essential to unlocking the vast potential of Nigeria’s blue economy,” he added.
Highlighting the state’s support for NMU, the governor noted his administration’s contributions guided by the M.O.R.E Agenda, including the construction and donation of a faculty complex and a road linking the host community to the university’s permanent site.
Addressing the graduating students, Governor Oborevwori congratulated them and charged them to uphold the values of excellence, integrity, and innovation instilled by the university.
“You are the torchbearers and future captains of a new era in Nigeria’s maritime sector. Be bold, dream big, work hard, and let your contributions reflect the excellence and pride of the Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko,” he urged.
He concluded his speech with appreciation to God, his family, and the people of Delta State, pledging continued service marked by humility and accountability.
