Jim Swartz, Chairman and Managing Director, Chevron Nigeria Limited

The NNPC Limited – Chevron Nigeria Limited Joint Venture (NNPC-CNL JV) has announced a significant near-field discovery with the successful drilling of the Meji NW-1 well in Petroleum Mining Lease (PML) 49, located in the shallow offshore area of the Western Niger Delta.

In a statement released to the National Reformer, Olusoga Oduselu, General Manager for Policy, Government, and Public Affairs, detailed that the well was spud on September 2, 2024, and reached a total depth of 8,983 feet by September 13, 2024.

He said The drilling encountered approximately 690 feet of hydrocarbons within Miocene sands, confirming the extension of the Meji field.

Well operations were completed on October 2, 2024, after the rig vacated the site. Oduselu emphasized that this discovery aligns with Chevron’s commitment to developing and expanding its Nigerian resources, particularly in onshore and shallow water areas.

“This accomplishment reflects CNL’s ongoing strategy to explore new resources that can enhance the lifespan of our existing operations and deliver production with shorter development cycles,” he stated.

The NNPC-CNL JV plans to continue its collaboration with the Nigerian government and various stakeholders to support the growth of the country’s oil and gas industry and bolster the national economy
