In a bid to enhance the learning environment and improve nursing students’ performances, the Delta State Government has given the green light for the construction of two classroom blocks with a capacity of 100 students per class for the State Colleges of Nursing located in Agbor, Eku, and Sapele, respectively.
The announcement was made by the Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, during a meeting with the Executive members of the Baptist School of Nursing Eku Alumni Association worldwide in Asaba on Wednesday.
Dr. Onojaeme highlighted efforts taken to improve the nursing profession in the state, including addressing discontent among government nursing staff and ensuring merit-based admissions through the recent common entrance examination into the five Colleges of Nursing.
One significant change mentioned by the Commissioner was the appointment of the most senior nurse in the State government’s employment to head the Department of Nursing Services, replacing a junior nurse. This decision was made to ensure effective leadership and service delivery within the Ministry.
Furthermore, Dr. Onojaeme emphasized the Ministry’s zero-tolerance policy towards the extortion of students by lecturers. He stated that a lecturer caught engaging in such misconduct was promptly investigated and faced appropriate disciplinary actions in line with due process.
Additionally, under his administration, the Schools of Midwifery in Asaba and Sapele were upgraded to Colleges of Nursing, reflecting the government’s commitment to advancing healthcare education and services in the state.
During the meeting, Mr. Emmanuel Agege, the President of the Baptist School of Nursing Eku Alumni Association worldwide, congratulated the Commissioner on his appointment, recognizing the positive strides being taken to improve nursing education and practice in Delta State.
He used the medium to thank the Commissioner for addressing the issue of headship of the department of nursing in the State Ministry of Health which has been a major challenge to nurses in the employment of government and outside government.
To this end, the Alumni Association purchased over 60 cartons of the book titled ‘Essentials For Optimal health’ written by Emmanuel Agege to be donated to the Colleges of Nursing Agbor, Eku and Warri at the first instance and subsequently donate to other Colleges and Schools in the State and also have plans to add more infrastructure in the School.
Highlight of the visit was the formal presentation of a complimentary copy of the book titled Essentials of Nursing to the Commissioner.
Present at the meeting were the Director Nursing Services, State Ministry of Health, Mrs. Mercy Atipko, and Executives of Alumni Association; Treasurer, Mrs. Annette Orovve, and Protocol 1, Mrs. Atake Okuyade.
