Commercial bus ticket sale resumes as Warri South Council settles union, drivers’ rift
Barely four days after the executive of Warri South Local Government Council, suspended the sale of commercial bus ticket in the council area over allegations of multiple levies by the drivers’ union, Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Dr. Michael Tidi, has lifted the suspension, authorizing sale of the ticket with effect from Monday October 26.
This was the fallout of a peace meeting held Sunday October 25 at the Police ‘ A’ Division in Warri, between key members of Warri South Local Government Council Executive, representative of the DPO of Police ‘ A’ Division Warri, the leadership of Branches A and B of Delta State Management Committee on Public Motor Parks and representatives of commercial bus drivers, operating in Warri South.
Dr. Tidi, stressed the need for the commercial bus drivers, leadership of the union and other critical stakeholders not to allow Warri go into crisis, saying the bus drivers’ union leaders should learn to do things differently going forward, considering the difficult times people are going through.
The Warri South Local Government Chief Security Officer, who was flanked by Secretary to the Local Government, Mr. Joseph Oribioye, the Council’s Supervisor for Environment, Mr. Shegue Gbenesuo and the Director of Personnel Management, Dr. ( Mrs.) Minnie Igbrude, tasked members of the Delta State Management Committee on Public Motor Parks, to ensure that the commercial bus drivers update their vehicle particulars always.
The Director of Personnel Management, Warri South Local Government Council, Dr. Minnie Igbrude, expressed delight that the initial agitation by the commercial bus drivers didn’t lead to destruction of public assets, saying any destruction would have taken the local government area 10 years backward.
She sued for continous peaceful dialogue between the drivers and their union leadership in concert with the council management.
The DPO of Police ‘ A’ Division in Warri, CSP Onyeke Ezekiel Odeviotu, in a message through ASP Akpoyimi Okubonanabo, stated that Warri South is more peaceful compared to other local government areas in the country as a result of efforts by the Dr. Tidi administration.
He enjoined the union leaders and the commercial bus drivers to maintain law and order as their contribution towards the sustenance of peace and security in Warri.
Chairman of Branch A of Delta State Management Committee on Public Motor Parks in Warri South, Chief Pullen Itepu and his Branch B Counterpart, Mr. Suru Diden, were among critical stakeholders that attended the peace meeting.
