Allegations of Police Misconduct Emerge in Edo State Investigation
A serious allegation has surfaced against Superintendent of Police Raphael Edai and Inspector Moses Ogunleye of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, accusing them of conspiring to undermine an ongoing investigation into multiple criminal offenses, including fraud and extortion.
In a formal complaint submitted to the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Samuel Esiegbuya detailed his concerns regarding the handling of his case against Mr. Jimoh Abubarka Francis.
Esiegbuya said in the letter said he had originally filed a petition in October 2021, which prompted a thorough investigation by the X-Squad Unit, then led by Superintendent Janet Molokwu.
“Consequently, the said investigation commenced and the realities in the allegations against the prime suspect Mr.Jimoh Abubarka Francis on the strength and probative values of evidence as adduced by me began to unfold and running smoothly without any obstruction or interferences while also in the process and to the best of my knowledge an Ex parte Court Order of a Competent Jurisdiction with suit number B/CD/1082/M/22 and dated Friday 20th day of May. 2022 was granted by the State High Court no: 4, Benin City Edo State as accordingly obtained by the legal department as requested to enable them effectively and thoroughly conduct and place a restrictions or Post No Debit in the erring bank accounts belonging to the suspect Mr. Francis Jimoh in the ongoing investigation,” Esiegbuya stated.
He however, stressed that he was disappointed following a reshuffle in 2023, when Edai took over the X-Squad Unit and allegedly stalled the investigation.
Esiegbuya reported that attempts to communicate with Edai and Ogunleye were met with silence, raising suspicions of misconduct.
Further complicating matters, Esiegbuya claims that the suspect’s bank accounts, previously frozen under a court order to facilitate the investigation, were unfrozen without proper notification or due process. This revelation has led Esiegbuya to believe that the investigation may have been compromised.
“Subsequently and to my surprised I later got a privileged information on the 22nd July 2024, that the bank accounts of the suspect Mr.Jimoh Abubarka Francis was unfrozen while the said investigation is still ongoing in the matter without my knowledge as a nominal compliment neither the involvement of the Court to which the Order was earlier granted,” the letter reads further.
In his letter, Esiegbuya called on the need for immediate action to address these allegations of corruption and misconduct within the police force, arguing that failure to do so would not only impede justice in his case but also tarnish the reputation of the Nigeria Police Force.
Esiegbuya is urging authorities to investigate the actions of the involved officers and ensure accountability to prevent further incidents of impunity within the police system. He awaits a response from the Police Service Commission regarding his serious claims.
