A political pressure group, Obas Movement for Good Governance, has taken its “Thank You All for Your Support” campaign to Evwreni Kingdom in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The group, led by Comrade Johnny Obakpororo, was accompanied by a large number of supporters from across Ughelli North, South and Udu Federal Constituency.
Speaking at the palace of the Ovie of Evwreni Kingdom, HRM Oghenekevwe Owin Kumani, Eruvwedede III, Obakpororo expressed appreciation to the monarch and people of the kingdom for their prayers, kindness and support before, during and after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primary election.
Obakpororo said he emerged victorious in the party’s primary, noting that the people of Evwreni Kingdom came out in large numbers to vote for him.
He, however, explained that following the primary, the leadership of the NDC at the local, state and national levels prevailed upon him to step aside for the current political dispensation.
According to him, his decision to respect the directive was informed by the values instilled in him by his family, particularly the need to respect elders and constituted leadership.
“I won the primary gallantly and victoriously. I won the primary election in all three local government areas of the Ughelli North, South and Udu Federal Constituency.
“I was prevailed upon by the leadership of our party to step aside for others for now. I’m no longer in the race; we are looking to the future elections,” he said.
Addressing NDC supporters who gathered in large numbers in Evwreni town to receive him, Obakpororo thanked them for their unwavering support and confidence in his political ambition.
He said the massive turnout demonstrated the people’s love for the party and their confidence in his leadership.
“I am here today to thank you for your unwavering and unalloyed support during and after our party’s primary. You have all demonstrated love and confidence in me.
“Your enthusiasm, love and support have shown that Evwreni people love our party and love me. I am here to say thank you all for your kind gestures and to let you all know that we won the party primary but were prevailed upon to step down for others for now.
“I’m no longer in the race; we are looking to the future elections,” he added.
Speaking with journalists after the visit, Obakpororo said he was overwhelmed by the warm reception accorded him by the monarch and his supporters.
He urged his supporters to remain hopeful and committed, assuring them that he would always make himself available whenever they called on him to provide leadership at any level.
The visit formed part of the “Thank You All for Your Support” tour by the Obas Movement for Good Governance to appreciate individuals and communities that supported Obakpororo during his political campaign and the NDC primary.
