Residents of Ughelli in Delta State were filled with excitement and gratitude following a large-scale empowerment initiative led by Dr. Lucas Oru, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and incoming member of the Delta State House of Assembly representing Ughelli North Constituency II.

The humanitarian gesture, which took place at Abel Bellvicj NIG LTD Filling Station, Afisere Junction, attracted a massive turnout of commercial transport operators, particularly motorcycle (Okada) and tricycle (Keke) riders, alongside other members of the community.

In a move aimed at cushioning the economic hardship faced by grassroots workers, Dr. Oru provided free fuel to over 1,000 bike and Keke drivers. The initiative significantly reduced the daily operational burden on the beneficiaries, many of whom have struggled to cope with the rising cost of fuel.

Speaking during the exercise, Dr. Oru revealed that the initiative was inspired by a recent personal encounter with a commercial motorcycle rider. During the ride, the operator lamented the high cost of fuel, the difficulty of maintaining motorcycles, and the financial strain of replacing worn-out tyres.

Deeply moved by the rider’s concerns which he noted reflect the broader challenges faced by many transport operators. Dr. Oru said he felt compelled to take immediate action.

Beyond fuel distribution, the APC chieftain also provided brand new tyres to the first 100 motorcycle riders at the venue. This, he said, was to improve road safety and ensure that operators could carry out their daily activities with greater confidence and reliability.

Dr. Oru emphasized that the initiative is part of a long-standing commitment to supporting grassroots communities. For over six years, he has consistently rolled out programmes aimed at improving the welfare of transport workers and other vulnerable groups in Ughelli and its environs.

The initiative sparked widespread jubilation across Ughelli, with beneficiaries and residents praising Dr. Oru for what they described as a timely and impactful intervention. Many commended his approach to leadership—one that listens to the concerns of the people and responds with practical solutions.

Several beneficiaries expressed their appreciation, noting that the support would go a long way in easing their financial burdens and sustaining their livelihoods.

Reaffirming his dedication to public service, Dr. Oru stated that improving the welfare of grassroots workers, including bike and Keke drivers, remains a top priority. He pledged to continue implementing people-oriented initiatives that directly address the needs of his constituents.

The event not only highlighted the pressing challenges faced by local transport operators but also underscored the positive impact of responsive and compassionate leadership in community development.
