Delta State’s Contributory Health Insurance Scheme has achieved a significant milestone, with over 2.4 million people now enrolled.
Isaac Akpoveta, the Director-General of the Delta State Contributory Health Commission (DSCHC), announced this development on Monday during the inauguration of Afiesere new community leadership in Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state.
Emphasizing the State’s leading position in the country, Akpoveta noted that the scheme ranks number one in Nigeria, surpassing other states by a margin of approximately one million enrollees.
“I want to say here today that the scheme in delta is number one in Nigeria with well over 2.4 million enrollment in the scheme. Other states in the country are about one million behind us. We are going to keep that pace in terms of funds, in terms of quality treatment and in terms of caring for the people.”
He praised the scheme’s growth and commitment to providing quality treatment and care for its beneficiaries.
He said one of the insurance scheme’s standout features is the indigent adoption initiative, where wealthier individuals purchase health insurance for the less fortunate.
Akpoveta expressed gratitude for this support, noting its role in ensuring that no one is left behind in accessing healthcare.
“People are now queuing into the Health Insurance scheme, especially the indigent adoption initiative where the rich buy insurance for the poor. I am very grateful and very elated and very happy because with this no one will be left behind. The indigent who really need healthcare who are sick and do not have anybody to help them and take them to the hospital, with this you are giving them a lifeline you are giving them a pathway to good health,” he added.
He shared that recent contributions, including 300 new policies by John Nanny and an additional 100 by the new president general of Afiesere community, have further strengthened the scheme.
The director general also noted the governor’s commitment to enhancing the insurance scheme, including a directive for all retired doctors in the state to join the initiative. He said this move is expected to significantly improve the quality of healthcare services at government hospitals.
Akpoveta described the registration process as highly efficient, with the capacity to enroll 1,000 people within three hours. He said the scheme utilizes an ICT-based system that ensures that registration is swift and that ID cards are promptly issued.
The DG added that the Contributory Health Scheme will continues to expand its reach, promising enhanced healthcare services for both general illness and maternity care which reflects the state’s ongoing efforts to support its most vulnerable populations.
