TRIBUTE TO A FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE:

REAR ADMIRAL (RTD) GOOD OMO-OHWO AKPOLO

Ever since I met you some 23 years ago in Port Harcourt, you’ve been that unofficial mentor that has guided my life. I still relish in that shock of knowing that we share the same birthday of 30 April. No wonder we were both ardent supporters of Manchester United even though I am far from being as fervent as you. I have watched from a distance and realized how much your family means to you and not just the immediate family. I recall vividly how you travel all the way from US to attend your niece’s wedding in Abuja, Nigeria. I therefore came to the conclusion that the life you lived was really not about you but others. I equally remember the advice you always gave to me as a junior officer to always be focused. Little did I know then that life issues are multi-dimensional and only a focused mind can navigate through them. I will forever be grateful to you for my unwavering focus about life. Despite the age difference and military etiquette, you were extremely humorous in your dealings with me. I remember when you were attacked in the confinement of your own home by those you trusted, you never stopped smiling and even make a joke of it despite losing a tooth and the pains you went through. To know that you showed no sign of regret even when you could not get justice and prevent such wicked act from happening to any innocent person that may employ the perpetrators only reinforced your believe that judgement is of the Lord and to forgive is absolutely divine. Oga Akpolo as my wife fondly calls you, certainly you’ve made our world a better place. My dear mentor, Good Omo Akpolo as you usually call yourself, I will miss you and our ever-unending discussions on Manchester United. You are one of my heroes. May you rest in the peace you so richly deserve. Adieu to a good friend and senior colleague.
