The Board of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) has expressed profound appreciation to Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for approving a one-year extension of its tenure.
The board conveyed its gratitude on Monday during an executive meeting held at the commission’s corporate headquarters in Warri and presided over by the Chairman, Chief Barr. John Nani.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the Managing Director of DESOPADEC, Chief Festus Ochonogor, described the governor’s decision as a clear demonstration of confidence in the leadership and achievements of the board.
According to him, members of the board are encouraged by the extension and remain grateful to Governor Oborevwori for giving them the opportunity to continue serving the oil-producing communities of Delta State.
Chief Ochonogor assured that the board would justify the confidence reposed in it by intensifying efforts to deliver more infrastructure projects, implement people-oriented programmes, and strengthen stakeholder engagement across the commission’s mandate areas.
He disclosed that DESOPADEC is set to commence the commissioning of several completed projects across the oil-producing communities to showcase the impact of the commission’s interventions.
“We have numerous completed projects across our mandate areas that many people are not aware of. We are looking forward to commissioning them so that the public can appreciate the impact of our interventions,” he said.
The Managing Director also announced plans to launch the DESOPADEC Skills Academy, a human capital development initiative designed to equip youths with practical vocational and entrepreneurial skills.
He explained that the programme aligns with the commission’s commitment to youth empowerment, job creation, and sustainable development within the mandate areas.
On industrial relations, Chief Ochonogor noted that the relationship between the board and staff of the commission remains cordial and productive.
He further revealed that efforts are ongoing to resolve the legal dispute involving the DESOPADEC branch of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE).
Expressing optimism about the outcome of the engagement, he said all parties are committed to finding an amicable resolution that would promote harmony and support the continued progress of the commission.
The DESOPADEC board reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating development initiatives and improving the living conditions of residents in the state’s oil-producing communities during the extended tenure.
