NUJ Warri Chapel Hails Uduaghan’s Legacy, Seeks Continuity of Welfare Programmes

By Francis Sadhere, Warri

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Warri Correspondents’ Chapel, has called on the Delta State Government to sustain and strengthen the welfare programmes introduced by the late former governor, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, in the interest of the people.

The chapel made the call in a communiqué issued at the end of its congress held on Friday, October 23, 2026, in Warri, where it expressed condolences to the family of the former governor, who died on Monday, October 19, at the age of 71.

The journalists said Uduaghan’s eight-year administration left an enduring legacy in journalists’ welfare, healthcare delivery, transportation and education, noting that several of his initiatives positively affected the lives of residents across the state.

The congress particularly recalled the former governor’s contributions to the welfare and professional development of journalists, including sponsorship for professional training programmes in the United Kingdom and the provision of working tools to media practitioners, especially members of the Warri Correspondents’ Chapel.

It said the initiatives demonstrated Uduaghan’s recognition of the role of journalists in society and his commitment to improving their professional capacity and working conditions.

The chapel also highlighted the late governor’s free maternal and child healthcare programme, which operated throughout his eight-year tenure and provided essential healthcare services to mothers and children.

According to the communiqué, the programme also led to the establishment of the Mother and Child Care Centre at the Central Hospital, Warri, a development the journalists described as an important contribution to healthcare delivery in the state.

The congress further recalled the introduction of free bus rides for pupils and students, subsidised intra-city and inter-city transportation, as well as the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) initiative.

It noted that the transportation schemes were designed to reduce the financial burden on residents, ease movement and improve access to essential services.

The journalists also commended the Edu-Marshall programme introduced by the Uduaghan administration to address the problem of out-of-school children, describing it as one of the initiatives through which the government sought to improve educational access and social welfare at the grassroots.

In view of the benefits associated with the programmes, the chapel urged the present state government and other relevant stakeholders to preserve the legacies and strengthen the initiatives where necessary to ensure that residents continued to benefit from them.

The congress said sustaining such programmes would help preserve the gains recorded under the late governor’s administration and reinforce efforts to improve the living conditions of Deltans.

It also prayed to God to grant the deceased’s family, the Delta State Government and the people of the state the strength to bear the loss.

The chapel further prayed for the peaceful repose of Uduaghan’s soul.

The communiqué was signed by Elo Edremoda, Success Okuchemiya and Samuel Ogude, members of the communiqué drafting committee.
