TANTITA’s Landmark CSR Gift to NUJ Warri Redefines Media-Security Relations in Nigeria

From Francis Sadhere, Warri

In a rare and transformative show of corporate social responsibility, security giant Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL) has reset the standards for media collaboration and community development by constructing and donating a state-of-the-art permanent secretariat to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Warri Correspondents’ Chapel.

The historic commissioning ceremony, held in Warri, Delta State, not only marked a milestone for the journalism profession but also stresses the growing synergy between the security sector and the fourth estate in promoting national interests.

While most CSR projects focus on education, healthcare, or infrastructure, TANTITA’s decision to invest directly in media infrastructure reflects a forward-thinking strategy that acknowledges the indispensable role of journalists in shaping public opinion, securing transparency, and amplifying developmental efforts.

Beyond Surveillance: TANTITA as a Strategic Partner in Development

Speaking on behalf of TANTITA Chairman, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo (alias Tompolo), the company’s Executive Director of Technical Operations, Capt. Enisuoh Wariedi, emphasized that the gesture was not merely benevolent but strategic.

“We see the media as more than reporters—they are national assets and partners in nation-building. Our collaboration must be deeper than occasional press statements. By giving this Chapel a permanent home, we are investing in credibility, continuity, and community,” Wariedi said.

This aligns with TANTITA’s broader narrative of responsible security services. While carrying out its critical pipeline surveillance mandate for the Federal Government, the company has also prioritized empowering host communities, enhancing local capacities, and fostering goodwill through inclusive development.

From Tenants to Landlords: A Turning Point for NUJ Warri

For over three decades, NUJ Warri Correspondents’ Chapel operated without a permanent address, moving from one rented office to another. That chapter has now closed. Chairman of the Chapel, Comrade Victor Okpomor, described the transition as “nothing short of redemptive.”

“In this building, we see more than walls and furniture—we see dignity restored, professionalism uplifted, and a future secured,” Okpomor noted.

He hailed key facilitators of the project, including Engr. Matthew Tonlagha, TANTITA’s Executive Director (002); the company’s MD, High Chief Kestin Pondi; and media consultant Dr. Paul Bebenimibo. He also thanked veteran journalist Asiwaju Sola Adebayo for his behind-the-scenes support.

A First in NUJ History

NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahyah, described the gesture as unprecedented in the history of the Union. “Not even our state councils can boast of such a facility. This is not just an achievement for Warri Chapel—it’s a national benchmark.”

Yahyah encouraged other corporate entities to emulate TANTITA’s example, noting that media empowerment is essential for democracy, security, and social cohesion.

Government, Royalty, and Security Brass Applaud Initiative

Representatives from the Delta State Government, traditional institutions, and retired security operatives were united in their commendation of the initiative.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by DESOPADEC Executive Director of Projects, Dr. Ebenezar Okorodudu, described the donation as “a vision-driven act of empowerment.” He affirmed the State Government’s readiness to support NUJ and deepen the role of the press in governance.

Royal fathers, including the Ovie of Idjerhe Kingdom, HRM King (Dr) Monday Obukohwo Whiskey, and the Orosuen of Okere-Urhobo Kingdom, HRM Ogheneochuko Ohwotemu, lent traditional authority to the celebration, emphasizing the enduring legacy of such a gesture in the annals of Delta journalism.

Former NUJ President, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, Brig. Gen. Felix Dafioghor, and Commodore Omatseye Nesiama (Rtd), also praised the initiative, calling it a “milestone in media empowerment and a model for sustainable security-media collaboration.”

A Model CSR Template for Corporate Nigeria

With this bold intervention, TANTITA has not only redefined the role of private security firms in Nigeria but has also set a CSR precedent for corporate Nigeria. By choosing to uplift the very institution that chronicles national progress and protects democracy—the press—the company has demonstrated a profound understanding of development that transcends its immediate mandate.

The NUJ Warri Secretariat now stands not just as a building, but as a beacon of partnership, perseverance, and purpose.
