UWUAGWU’S APPOINTMENT, BEST MOTIVATION FOR THE POINTER WORKFORCE – MACAULAY
BY CHRISTOPHER ODAMAH
A former Secretary to Delta State Government and pioneer Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State, Comrade Ovuozourie Macaulay, has commended the State Government for looking inwards with the appointment of Mr. Monday Uwuagwu as General Manger of The Pointer Newspaper.
Macaulay professed that the state government’s effort will in no little way motivate the workforce which will invariably deepen their commitment.
He gave the commendation when he played host to a working visit by the General Manager, The Pointer, Mr. Monday Uwuagwu, in his Asaba residence.
According to him, “We have been talking of looking inwards. Encouraging people to grow. When I entered journalism in those days, my highest aim was to become a controller. To us that was the height in the broadcasting business. You can only imagine what employing an outsider to head that rank would have done to our motivation. Bringing people from outside discourages commitment and demotivates. I am happy that the state government took that into consideration.”
The veteran labour leader, advised the new General Manager to cast aside the history of bickering for the position and place focus on distinguishing himself by delivering on his mandate.
His words, “You must put behind the pre-competition history in order to build a strong family. It is only this way that the external completion can go away. You came in at a very political period. There are more complexities working in a political system because of the divergent interest. Raise the bar of The Pointer beyond government Public Relations. Make it more competitive by reflecting interest of the taxpayers in reportage even as you profess the government.”
“I am sure the State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa will not support sycophancy. One place a good governor will look up to for policy drive is the media. I am not sure any government will want to throw money into such a place where bootlicking is the order. Do everything to show the governor that you are not a misfit. It is a lot of sacrifice. The truth is always bitter. In a nutshell, always beware of unnecessary ovation.” Macaulay stressed.
Earlier, the General Manager, Mr. Monday Uwuagwu said his leadership is ready to consult more to set things right even as he commended Macaulay for always giving ears to issues relating to The Pointer Newspaper.
